(Portland, ME)- Virgil Chevalier hit a two-run homer in the top of the 9th Inning to give the Thunder a 2-1 win over Portland Saturday night. The win snapped Trenton`s three-game losing skid.
Trenton (56-55) trailed 1-0 going into the 9th Inning, but got a leadoff single by Freddy Sanchez off Sea Dogs reliever Brian Edmondson.
Chevalier followed by hitting a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for his 14th homer of the year and a 2-1 lead. The home run gives Chevalier a new career high.
Edmondson (1-3), who played for the 1994 Trenton Thunder as a member of the Detroit organization, allowed two runs in two innings for the loss.
Portland (58-53) got their only run in the 7th Inning on an RBI single by Brett Roneberg off Jorge DeLaRosa.
Both starters worked six shutout innings on the night. Trenton`s Josh Hancock allowed five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Portland`s Claudio Vargas allowed two hits with four strikeouts.
The series concludes on Sunday at 1:00 PM. Mike Kusiewicz (4-3), just recalled from Pawtucket, goes for Trenton against Portland`s Kevin Olsen (9-1).
