Area Braces for Another Major Snowstorm
AccuWeather says a major snowfall is on the way for the Delaware Valley region, Friday night into Saturday. Six to 12 inches of accumulation is expected in Philadelphia before it ends.
The area has already had more snow this winter than we had all of last winter, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Bob Larson:
"We have had already more than 27 inches of snow at his point in time, and of course amounts vary from one part of the Delaware Valley to the other. There has already been more than two feet of snow this winter season."
And that, he says, is more than all of last winter's:
"Yeah, last year we ended up with between 22 and 23 (inches)."
Larson says the coming storm is tracking from the south, and the bullseye will most likely be the Baltimore-Washington area.
He says it's been a persistent theme that the heaviest snow has been hitting the South. Larson says El NiƱo, in the equatorial warm waters of the Pacific, is partly to blame:

"It alters weather patterns across different parts of the world. One of the things we noticed across the US during the winter seasons is an active southern storm track, basically taking storms from Southern California across the deep South. Some of those storms work their way up to the mid-Atlantic."
And hang in there, he says -- there may be another snowstorm coming to our area late Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. Stay tuned to KYW Newsradio 1060 all weekend long for news, weather, and traffic updates, school closings (including religious schools), and community cancellations.
KYW's Michelle Durham asked local travel experts what your options are if you decided to get away from it all and go somewhere warm, but now this storm is threatening your plans.
Ian Swain of Swain Travel in Ardmore, Pa. says he is advising his customers:
"What we're trying to tell them is that if they have the chance to leave before the snow gets here, take that opportunity. It's a matter of calling the airlines and trying get the seats re-changed. As we all know, once the snow falls the airports close down pretty quickly."
And Cathy Rossi of AAA Mid-Atlantic says that this is the time you may have to tap that trip insurance:
"There is travel insurance that is change-for-any-reason insurance. And this is exactly the sort of reason a traveler would purchase that type of insurance, because we can't control Mother Nature."
As far as car travel goes, Rossi says to make sure you have an emergency kit in the car (including water and blankets), keep plenty of distance between you and the car in front of you, and if you get stranded stay with your car.
