Rock Cats Avoid Sweep

(Trenton)- New Britain smacked four solo home runs to beat the Thunder, 8-6, Wednesday night at Waterfront Park. The win avoided a series sweep by Trenton.
C Brandon Marsters had two of the home runs, his fourth and fifth of the year, for the Rock Cats (15-15). DH Jeff Smith and SS Kevin Hodge accounted for the other two.
Trenton (11-20) had an early 3-1 lead in the 3rd inning, but New Britain scored at least one run in every inning from the 3rd inning on for the win.
The Rock Cats took the lead for good in the 5th inning as they loaded the bases against Thunder reliever Marty McLeary. On a ground ball by Jeff Smith, 1B Virgil Chevalier made a throw to 2nd base that went into left field and scored two runs.
Hodge`s homer came in the ninth to make it 8-5. Trenton added a two-out RBI single from Luis Roriguez to get it back to a two runs game, but that was as close as they would get.
Brad Thomas (3-0) got the win as he went 5 2/3 innings on the night. Saul Rivera worked the 9th inning for his 6th save. Marty McLeary (3-4) took the loss.
The Thunder begin an eight-game road trip on Thursday to New Haven and Bowie. Game #1 will see Casey Fossum (0-4) take on New Haven`s Patrick Coogan (2-1). First pitch is at 6:35 PM.
