Bridgeport Speedway News Jimmy Horton Wins For Second Week in a Row For His Fifth Win of the Season

Bridgeport, NJ – Neshanic Station, NJ`s Jimmy Horton continued his domination of the Bridgeport big block modified division Saturday night, winning the “Labor Day 30” thirty lap main event and pocketing the $3000 first place prize for the extra distance holiday race. It was the second win in a row for Horton, who has three wins and a second place finish in his last four races at New Jersey`s fastest dirt track. In Bridgeport Sportsman action, Glenloch, NJ`s Sam Wescott visited victory lane for the third time this season, winning the twenty lap Bridgeport Sportsman feature. Warren Durbin, driving the Lucas Electric #69 out of New Egypt, NJ, grabbed his first career victory in the Bridgeport Winged Sprint class, winning the twenty lap A-Main, while Wayne Pfeil won for the third time this season in the Street Stock division.

Rick Laubach, in the Auger Manufacturing #93, blasted from his third starting spot to grab the early lead in the thirty lap “Labor Day 30” main event for the Big Block Modifieds, and held the lead for the first six laps. Jamie Mills, who started the night as the Modified point leader, was charging to the front using the outside groove, and after executing a three-wide pass of Ricky Elliott and Doug Hoffman in turn two of lap five, Mills made the same move on Laubach to take the lead on the next lap. Mills was in control of the top spot for the next seven laps, when Jimmy Horton made a diving move under Mills in turn one and pulling by Mills exiting turn two to take the lead on lap fourteen. Horton had the Miles Concrete #901 on cruise control, and was never really challenged while on his way to his 97th Bridgeport Speedway modified victory. Elliott finished second in the Overhead Doors #0 with Doug Hoffman right behind him in third place. Mills and 2000 modified champ Wade Hendrickson completed the top five. Qualifying heats were won by Duane Howard, Horton, and Elliott, while Scott Kania took the consolation race.

After passing early leader Andy Burkhart on the outside of turn two on lap four, Rich Stinson, driving the Del-Val Pools #91, could only hold on to the top spot for the next four laps of the Bridgeport Sportsman feature. Sam Wescott was charging up from his tenth starting spot, and made an inside move on Stinson in turn four and moved by on the front straight to lead lap eight. Wescott had to go the second half of the twenty lap race fighting off the challenges of Ron Roberts, who moved into second place on lap ten, after starting the race in eighth place. Wescott and Roberts had the fans on the edge of their seats, as they ran side by side for much of the remaining ten laps. At the finish, it was Wescott and Roberts nose to tail, with Steve Lindale, Stinson, and Don Barone filling out the top five. Four heats were needed for the fifty-two Bridgeport Sportsman racers and they were won by Richie Pratt, Steve Harrison, Mark Forte, and Burkhart. Frank McDonell and Dan Cogdill won the consolation races.

Bob “the Lone Ranger” Adams started the Bridgeport Winged Sprint A-Main on the pole and looked to be on his way to his third win of the season, leading the first fourteen laps of the twenty lap race. First Adams had to fight off Mike Piersig in the Comcast #24, until Piersig hit one of the marker tires in turn three, which ended his night with front-end damage. Adams went past the halfway mark with a comfortable lead, until Warren Durbin and point leader Jeff Foote began closing in. The flying Durbin made his move and passed Adams in turn four to take the lead on lap fifteen, while Foote worked his way by Adams on the next lap. With one to go, Foote was right on Durbin`s bumper, but Durbin worked lapped traffic to his advantage and went on to win his first career Bridgeport Winged Sprint A-Main. Foote maintained his point lead with his runner-up finish while Adams held on to third place. 2000 point champ Steve Fleetwood and Joe Butts, Jr. rounded out the top five. Adams and Jon Brennfleck won the qualifying heats for the Jasper Racing Engines sprinters.

Street stock point leader Rich Reider started the fifteen-lap feature race in third place and had the lead before the field was on the backstretch of the big 5/8th mile speedway. The Mays Landing, NJ driver, who has five wins this season, looked to be on his way to number six, until Wayne Pfeil, in his #72, worked his way past Reider in turn two right before the five to go signal was given by Assistant Starter Mike Knappenberger. Pfeil went on to his fourth win of the season, with Reider right behind in second. Bill Force Sr. and Phil Retter finished third and fourth, with two-time point champ Ron Coverly coming home fifth.
