South Jersey's Biggest Basketball Wins of the Season
High school girls’ and boys’ basketball teams will now get seriously into conference play after an interesting week of holiday tournaments.

Here is a look at some of the big winners during the holiday tourney season with stats courtesy of NJ.com.

Audubon boys’ and girls

Audubon staged its own tournament for boys and girls and the Green Wave ended victorious in both.

The girls’ team improved to 6-0 with a 42-25 win over Maple Shade in the final. The Green Wave beat Deptford, 45-22 in the semifinal, continuing its early-season defensive mastery.

Sophomore guard Emma Speyerer had 11 points against Deptford and 15 against Maple Shade.

The boys’ team had an easier path to the title. Since there were just three teams in the boys’ tourney, Audubon earned a first-round bye and then beat rival Haddon Township, 50-42 in the championship. A’Zon Young, a 6-1 sophomore, led the Green Wave with 24 points in the title game.

Cinnaminson boys

Cinnaminson didn’t play in a tournament, but won both of its games in the Butch McLean Memorial (Showcase) at Haddon Heights.

The Pirates beat Seneca, 72-50 and a formidable Camden Catholic team, 64-54. That improved the Pirates to 6-1. Junior guard Noah Harvey scored 29 points in the win over Camden Catholic. Last year Cinnaminson won the Burlington County Patriot Division. This year the Pirates are in the highly competitive Burlington Liberty, where Trenton Catholic and Medford Tech should make this a great three-team race.

Cherry Hill East girls

The Cougars play in the always difficult Olympic Conference American Division, so it’s important for all American Division teams to do as well as possible out of the division. East did just that during the holidays, improving to 4-1 after a convincing title in the Burlington Township Holiday Classic. East defeated Triton, 68-29 in the first round and hosted Burlington Township, 78-25 in the championship.

It wasn’t surprising that East won, but the margin of victory wasn’t expected. Junior guard Darby Chhabria led the way, scoring 21 points in both games.

Palmyra girls

The Panthers captured the Pitman Classic. Palmyra beat Gloucester 48-33 in the semifinal and defeated host Pitman, 50-29 in the final. Cadence Anderson, a 5’6” senior, not only scored 17 points in the championship game, but added 10 steals.

In the win over Gloucester, Anderson scored 28 of Palmyra’s 48 points.

Not surprisingly, Anderson was the tournament MVP

“Cadence is always one step ahead, she anticipates well,” Palmyra coach Sean Brady said.

Brady added that this was only the second time that Palmyra has won the Pitman tournament and that the Panthers are an annual participant.

“It’s always a goal to win this tournament and to bring something back from Pitman and this year we were really excited to do that,” Brady said.

Palmyra entered the New Year 6-0 and should be in a great battle this season with Bordentown in the Burlington County Freedom Division.

Mainland girls

The Mustangs improved to 6-0 after winning the Score at the Shore Tournament at Southern Regional. Mainland had a bye into the semifinals of the seven-team tournament. The Mustangs beat Lenape, 50-46 in the semifinal and then defeated Trinity Hall, 39-30 in the championship game. This was a quality tournament that besides Mainland, Lenape and Trinity Hall, also included, among others, Cherokee and Shawnee. In the championship game, senior Bella Mazur scored 15 points for Mainland. Bella’s twin, Ava Mazur, added 13 in the title game. Senior Kasey Bretones, who had 15 points in the semifinal win and six in the championship, was named the tournament MVP.
