'Winning It All Was Worth It'
Alaina Dorsey was soaking in the excitement along with the rest of her Tri-Cape softball teammates. Dorsey and her team were honored last week at Citizens Bank Park for winning the 20th annual Carpenter Cup softball championship.
Both her team and the winning Burlington County baseball squad were introduced before the Phillies 13-3 rout of the Baltimore Orioles.
Dorsey, a rising senior at St. Joseph Hammonton, was a big part of the Tri-Cape winning team both offensively and defensively, where she constantly made big plays in centerfield.
She is the typical top of the order player, with great speed, terrific contact skills and just a major nuisance to the opponent when she reaches base.
Her Tri-Cape team, consisting of players from the Cape Atlantic League and Tri-County Conference, went 6-0 in this year’s Carpenter Cup, which was played down the street from Citizens Bank Park at FDR Park.
She has had many thrills in her softball career and can count being introduced before the Phillies game as another.
“This is amazing,” she said. “I went to my first ever Phillies game a few months ago and now to be back and actually getting announced it’s like wow, it’s crazy.”
That would be a good way to describe the Tri-Cape’s run to its second Carpenter Cup title in the past three years.
On the final day, the Tri-Cape had to win three games while competing in near 100 degree temperatures.
“It was really hot, but winning it all was totally worth it,” she said.
During her freshman year, the Wildcats won the first ever NJSIAA Non-Public B state championship in school history. In the 7-1 title win over Morris Catholic, Dorsey, batting leadoff, went 3-for-4 with a double, two triples, a stolen base, one run scored and three RBIs.
St. Joseph has won the South Jersey Non-Public B championship in each of her three years.
Dorsey has a career .453 average in her first three seasons with St. Joseph. She has scored 88 runs, while providing 74 stolen bases.
This summer she has competed for the high-profile New Jersey Gators team.
All this is great preparation not only for her senior season, but beyond. Dorsey will continue her education and softball career at Division I Seton Hall.
“I am so excited, and I can’t wait to compete for Seton Hall,” she said.
First of course, is the business of her final season at St. Joseph.
“It has been amazing playing (for St Joseph),” she said. “I feel like it brought out the best of me as a player, just playing with them and practicing every day.”
She said the school has helped her on and off the field.
“I think personally, it has made me a better ball player and a better person, socially, mentally and physically,” she said.
This was Dorsey’s final time competing in the Carpenter Cup since rules prohibit graduating seniors from participating. She said she is so glad that she got to enjoy this experience, yet another highlight in a career that has included many of them.
