The Class of the NFC
The Eagles have had two straight lackluster offensive games, but the defense has been out of this world against two playoff contenders: the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions.Still time to panic?
We don’t think so.
The Eagles are 8-2, tied for the best record in the NFC with the Los Angeles Rams. Keep in mind the Eagles own the tiebreaker over the Rams by defeating them earlier this year.
While the Rams right now are on a roll and quarterback Matthew Stafford would be the NFL MVP if the season ended today, this is a team that the Eagles have had their number against.
Twice, the Eagles beat the Rams last year, including once in the playoffs and earlier this year the Eagles also beat Sean McVey’s team, 33-26. The Eagle overcame a 26-7 third quarter deficit.
That doesn’t mean the Rams won’t be formidable, but if the Eagles' biggest NFC threat is a team that has lost to them three straight times. It might be premature to suggest the Eagles have the Rams' number, but let's just say they don't fear them.
Let’s look at the Eagles remaining schedule: at Dallas, home vs. Chicago, at the LA Chargers, vs. Las Vegas, at Washington, at Buffalo and home against Washington.
Looks like there will be a lot of W’s in that remaining schedule.
Just like last year, the Eagles are gaining a fierce defensive identity.
The addition of defensive end Jaelen Phillips for a third-round pick from Miami, was another great move by Eagles GM Howie Roseman. In two games, Phillips has proven to be a menacing force.
Against Detroit, he had a sack among his five tackles and two quarterback hurries.
Phillips has spoken on how he enjoys being here. He is a pending free agent and it’s easy to bet that the Eagles will re-sign him.
Now there should be concerns about an offense that scored just 26 total points against the Packers and Lions.
Jalen Hurts had just a 63.8 passer rating against the Lions.
The problem for Detroit is that its quarterback Jared Goff had just a 60.0 rating.
The defense right now is Super Bowl caliber.
The offense isn’t.
Even though the schedule is awfully light the rest of the way, the Eagles have to gain a rhythm on offense.
Getting the ball to wide receivers has for some reason, still been a challenge.
With the heart of the schedule out of the way, the Eagles can use the rest of the season to try to get the offense in gear.
Right now, the team that is in trouble is one attempting to score on the Eagles defense.
