New Winslow Township Football Coach Jamal White Excited About His New Opportunity
Jamal White has enjoyed quite an impressive football resume as a player and assistant coach. Now the 1998 Triton graduate has the chance to run his own program.
White is in his first year as the head football coach at Winslow Township.
He enters a high-profile program, looking to continue the recent success.
Winslow Township is the two-time defending state Group 4 champion. Coach Bill Belton, a Winslow Township graduate, who guided the Eagles the previous four years, left to become the head coach at St. Augustine.
White comes with an extensive coaching background, where he was known for his innovative offenses as a coordinator.
He was an assistant coach at Timber Creek for 13 seasons. There he coached a number of future NFL players, including Damiere Byrd, who played parts of eight seasons in the NFL as a lightning quick receiver.
White, who didn’t coach during the 2025 season, is the former offensive coordinator for Woodbury and helped lead the Thundering Herd to the 2022 state Group 1 championship in the first year that the public schools were able to compete for an NJSIAA state title.
“This is a great opportunity,” White said in a recent interview with SouthJersey.com. “I have been an offensive coordinator for many years and now is a great chance to run a program.”
Any team with White has been known for its ability to score early and often. That shouldn’t change for Winslow Township despite the fact that several players transferred after Belton left.
White isn’t complaining about who isn’t there, instead happy to coach the players who will be competing for Winslow Township.
“While some guys left to go to other schools, I am excited about the guys who did stay and we have the next man up mentality,” he said. “The people we have are guys who can get the job done and I feel I have been blessed with a great situation.”
Winslow Township has one of the toughest schedules in South Jersey. The Eagles are members of the quality West Jersey Football League American Division.
The division includes defending state Group 5 champion Washington Township, along with South Jersey Group 5 runner-up Kingsway, and serious Group 5 contender Atlantic City. The other division team is Millville, which is considered a sure-fire preseason Top 10 team in South Jersey.
In addition, the non-league schedule doesn’t let up. Winslow Township opens Saturday, Aug. 29 at Rowan University against Neptune. Also on the schedule is two-time defending state Group 1 champion Glassboro, which will likely be a top five preseason team in South Jersey.
Needless to say, there are no automatic W’s on this schedule, which is fine with the coach.
“It will be a big test this year with the caliber of teams we play and we will be ready to hopefully be up for the challenge,” he said.
White was a standout running back at Triton, but he switched to receiver in college, where he enjoyed a record-setting career at Townson University.
White, whose final season at Towson was 2002, remains second on the school’s career reception list with 219, second with 3,156 career receiving yards and tied for third with 21 career receiving touchdowns.
He owns the Townson single-season record with 82 receptions in 1999 (in 11 games) and 1,322 receiving yards, also that season. He is tied for the school’s single-game reception mark with 13 against Dayton in 1999.
In 2019 he was inducted into Towson’s Athletic Hall of Fame, two years after entering Triton’s Hall of Fame in 2017.
After college, he played briefly with the Canton Legends of the American Indoor Football League, but a season-ending injury forced him to retire. He then began his long career as an assistant coach.
Besides looking to produce a winning program, he feels that there is much more to being the head coach.
“You want the players to have a good experience and enjoy their time out there,” he said. “They can gain life-long memories while learning to be young men and great citizens, not just football players.”
