Eagles Lacking Style Points, But Not Wins

The lessons we learned from Week 1 in the NFL, were the same in Week 2 – take your wins, don’t apologize for them and try to keep getting better.

The Eagles were solid favorites their first two weeks and just got out by the skin of their teeth. But from their perspective, at least they survived.

After an opening 24-22 win over the Washington Commanders, the Eagles struggled even more against a worse team, the Tennessee Titans.

Yes the game was played in 150-degree heat (the temperature on the artificial turf was measured at 157 degrees), but the Titans have all the look of another 14-loss NFL team.

The Eagles needed a last-minute comeback orchestrated by Jalen Hurts to escape with a 24-20 victory over the Titans, who showed great fight and little else.

Hurts wasn’t as sharp as usual, throwing two interceptions, but when it mattered, he delivered, a common occurrence during his career.

It was the 14^th game-winning drive in Hurts’ career.

The comeback was capped by Darius Cooper’s 3-yard touchdown reception with just nine seconds remaining. BTW – Do you think Cooper will always remember his first NFL touchdown?

The Eagles won despite losing tight end Dallas Goedert to injury in the second quarter. The running game and Saquon Barkley were virtually non-existent. Barkley, who missed most of the first half after suffering a stinger before returning in the third quarter, rushed for nine yards on four carries.

So with no Goedert down the stretch and an ineffective Barkley, the Eagles still won.

Take the win and go home.

Yes, Hurts need to improve, but when the game was on the line, he did his specialty by winning the game.

In the first two games we have learned that DeVonta Smith (10 receptions, 117 yards, one touchdown against Tennessee) can indeed be a No. 1 receiver after the departure of AJ Brown.

Smith had several clutch catches, especially in the final drive and this could be the start of a Pro Bowl season.

Now the first two weeks have shown that the Eagles also need to improve in many areas, and if they don’t, then they will eventually be in trouble, but in the NFL, when virtually nobody plays in the preseason, the Eagles refuse to give back early-season wins, no matter how many warts are exposed.

Sure, all this week the talk about the Eagles’ playing mediocre football will be on the airways, but look around the NFL and see how many so-called good teams have struggled in the first two weeks.

Take the Los Angeles Chargers for example.

They are 0-2 and now face a treacherous part of their schedule. They opened with Arizona and Las Vegas, two teams that were a combined 6-28 last year.

Here are the Chargers’ next four games – at Buffalo, at Seattle, home against Denver and at Kansas City.

Yikes.

The Eagles situation, which might be looked on as dire by the fans, is so much better than the Chargers’ and many other teams.

On Monday, the Eagles face a Chicago Bears team that opened the season by scoring 59 points in a win over Carolina before losing a 9-3 snoozer to the Minnesota Vikings in Week Two.

Oh yes, Bears QB Caleb Williams left the game midway through the fourth quarter with a right hamstring injury. So now the Eagles will likely be facing Tyson Bagent instead of Williams.

Even though the game is in Chicago, how can you not like the Eagles’ chances?

In the NFL anybody can win. A classic example was the Cleveland Browns victory in soggy Tampa Bay on Sunday. After facing the Bears, the Eagles meet the LA Rams, who will be without All-Everything stud defensive end Myles Garrett.

Even with these supposed breaks, the Eagles have to take advantage of them.

So far, they have when it mattered the most.
