Will Carson Wentz Get Traded?

During the opening press conference of new Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, many questions were asked about Carson Wentz and not surprisingly, no concrete answers were given.

Sirianni said he has spoken to both Wentz and Jalen Hurts, but wouldn’t give any details of the conversation with either quarterback.

When asked if Wentz would be the starting quarterback, Siriann said, “I can’t answer that.”

He went out of his way to say he thought the Eagles had two quality quarterbacks, but you know the old saying – “If you have two quarterbacks you really have none.”

There have been reports about Wentz demanding a trade, but they have not been verified. Wentz hasn’t spoken to the media since he was benched in favor of Hurts with four games left in the season.

Sirianni wouldn’t even say whether there will be an open competition at quarterback, probably because at this point, he doesn’t know whether both quarterbacks or either one of them will be on the team.

So much seems up in the air.

One thing is for sure, the Eagles won’t simply cut Wentz, it would be too big of a salary cap hit.

They could trade him and if so, would still have $33.8 million of a cap hit if Wentz is traded by the third day of the league year, according to overthecap.com.

The League year begins on March 17. After the third day of the league year, Wentz is due a $10 million roster bonus, so if the Eagles are going to trade him, it makes sense prior to the third day of the league year.

Just an opinion here is that Jeffrey Lurie hired Sirianni to “fix” Wentz. The only problem comes if Wentz doesn’t want to be fixed and demands a trade.

That hasn’t been reported yet, so stay tuned, but one thing is for sure. The blockbuster trade on Saturday between the Los Angles Rams and Detroit, shows that high priced quarterbacks can be dealt.

Detroit traded quarterback Matthew Stafford to the LA Rams for quarterback Jared Goff, first round picks in 2022 and 2023 and a 2021 third round pick, according to ESPN, which broke the story. The deal can’t be made official until March 17, the start of the new year in the NFL

Like Wentz, Goff was signed to a huge extension, four years for $134 million, with $110 million guaranteed.

It shows that a big contract can be dealt, but the Rams had to give up three draft choices along with Goff.

One has to wonder if there is a team that would want to trade for Wentz. Indianapolis, with former Eagle offensive coordinator Frank Reich, has been the top rumored landing spot if Wentz is dealt.

The Colts need a quarterback with Philip Rivers announcing his retirement and Jacoby Brissett a free agent.

One gets the impression that the Eagles would rather keep Wentz, but what if they refuse to guarantee him the job, would he want to compete for it?

What the Stafford-Goff trade shows is that anything can happen and it is the beginning of what could be a wild NFL offseason involving quarterbacks.

The big question is whether the Eagles be involved or will Wentz stay put/
