South Jersey Football Games of the Week

South Jersey Football Games of the Week
Besides the St. Augustine at Williamstown matchup, which is our South Jersey Game of the week, here are some of the other top football games this week:

Friday
Lenape (3-0) at Shawnee (0-4), 6 pm. How can an 0-4 team give Lenape a game? Shawnee has one of the most deceiving records in South Jersey. The three-time defending South Jersey Group 4 champs aren’t as imposing as previous years, but Shawnee has played a difficult schedule and has been competitive. Last week’s 24-21 loss against Cherokee, among the top teams in South Jersey, was an example. Cherokee needed a 9-yard touchdown in the final minute to defeat the Renegades. Shawnee quarterback Matt Welsey threw two touchdown passes and ran for another. Welsey is among the better quarterbacks in South Jersey. Lenape has defeated Eastern, Seneca and Rancocas Valley by a combined 103-14 score. This is usually a Thanksgiving game and should have plenty of intensity between these two Lenape School District rivals.

Holy Cross (1-2) at Paul VI (3-1), 7 pm. Holy Cross has been in every game. After an opening 27-7 win over Florence, the Lancers have lost to New Egypt, 24-19 and last week 25-20 to Bordentown. Holy Cross led Bordentown 20-19 entering the fourth quarter. Darnell Jackson scored on runs of 19 and 23 yards for Holy Cross. Paul VI was just 1-9 last season, but under second-year coach Dennis Scuderi, has enjoyed a resurgence. The Eagles lone loss was 28-14 to Cherry Hill West. Paul VI bounced back with wins over Triton and last week, 27-12 over Bishop Eustace. (Last year Paul VI’s lone win came over Eustace). Despite the records, this should be a highly competitive game.

Woodrow Wilson (1-2 at Haddonfield (2-1), 7 pm. Haddonfield bounced back from a loss to Camden by defeating Collingswood last week, 35-0. Bulldogs junior Carson Wolff has been a dual threat. He has thrown for 157 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 126 yards and three scores. Senior Tommy Badson has rushed for 216 yards (4.5 avg.). Wilson, the two-time defending SJ Group 3 champ, opened the season with a 34-27 victory over Shawnee, but the Tigers have been shut out in consecutive weeks to Cherokee and Winslow Township, two teams that are a combined 8-0.

Penns Grove (2-2 at Paulsboro (3-0), 11 am. This is a rematch of last year’s South Jersey Group 1 final that Penns Grove won 30-0 to earn its second straight sectional crown. Paulsboro has played a tough schedule with wins over Woodbury, West Deptford and Collingswood. In last week’s 48-14 win over Collingswood, Paulsboro running back Bhayshul Tuten showed why he is among South Jersey’s top players. Tuten scored five touchdowns, three on runs, one a 65-yard pass from Tyree Thomas and the fifth on an 85-yard kickoff return. He has scored nine touchdowns in the three games. Penns Grove bounced back from consecutive losses to Salem and Delsea with last week’s 40-0 win over Glassboro. Senior Nasir Robinson has rushed for 458 yards (7.3 avg.) and six touchdowns for Penns Grove.
