Vineland grad Toro Looking To Continue His Baseball Career at National Power
Recent Vineland graduate got his summer off to a strong start by being named the MVP of the fourth annual D2 Sports Network South Jersey Baseball All-Star game at Rutgers Camden.

Toro, an infielder, pitcher for Vineland, did both in the all-star game.

“It was a lot of fun,” Toro said of the all-star game, played in mid-June. “I was out with a lot of guys I was meeting and getting to know and they are all great ballplayers and we came out here looking to win.”

His team did win and it was just another strong showing for Toro, who this past season for Vineland was 4-2 with a 2.65 ERA. He struck out 50 in 37 innings and batted .289 with four home runs and 24 RBIs for a Vineland team that went 15-11 while playing a challenging schedule. The Fighting Clan earned a berth in the Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic, beating Shawnee in the first round before losing to eventual champion Gloucester Catholic. Vineland finished second in the Cape Atlantic League behind South Jersey Non-Public A champion St. Augustine. The Fighting Clan also advanced to the semifinal of the Cape Atlantic League tournament before suffering a 2-1 loss to Egg Harbor Township. The season ended with a 7-6 loss to Cherry Hill East in a first round South Jersey Group 4 playoff game.

One question that baffled Toro was what he was more proficient at – hitting or pitching?

“Honestly, I can’t pick one of the two,” Toro said. “I just go out there and try to do my job and I just have fun.”

Next season Toro will continue his baseball career and education at perennial national junior college power Rowan College of South Jersey (Gloucester).

RCSJ Gloucester won three straight national Division III championships from 2023-2025. Division III consists of non-scholarship junior colleges.

This past season RCSJ Gloucester again qualified for the World Series and finished runner-up, losing to SUNY Niagra, 12-8 in the championship game series. (RCSJ Gloucester needed to win twice to earn the national title).

Under coach Rob Valli, the Roadrunners expect to compete for a national championship every season.

“My plan is to go there and work with a great coach Rob Valli,” Toro said. “I am going to develop there a lot, he’s going to work with me in every type of way possible for the next level and get me ready to play some ball.”

He was recruited as a two-way player.

“It could go either way,” Toro said.

Toro hopes to be ready when RCSJ Gloucester begins fall baseball practice. He is playing in two leagues this summer, the Shore League for the Absecon Black Jacks and the Tri-County men’s league for Gartons, a team from Vineland.

“It is a lot of competition this summer, some Division II, some D-1 guys,” Toro said.

Two things that Toro has tried to do throughout his career are to work hard and have fun.

“The people who aren’t having fun, are just out there stressing and putting a lot of pressure on themselves,” he said. “This game is meant to be fun.”

It’s easier to have fun when you’ve enjoyed the success of Toro, a four-year varsity performer at Vineland, who is looking forward to competing at the next level.
