Attention To Detail …From the pages of Suburban Home and Garden Resource Guide…

The small touches you can make to your home that can totally transform your space

Tough economic times give homeowners new perspective on their surroundings. Five years ago, you might have been tempted to sell your house and find something newer, bigger, better. Today, homeowners are seeing old spaces in a new light and finding ways to improve them. Adding rich details can bring new excitement to your home—giving you big impact for a modest investment. Here are some tips from the experts on how to make magic in your space.

Make the most of millwork and woodwork.
“There are so many wonderful ways to enhance your home with custom woodwork. Whether it’s a wall of custom bookshelves in a library, or richly trimmed archways, headers and columns between rooms, custom moldings add distinction. One of the most popular applications today is to place a flat-screen TV over a fireplace and to set it off with columns, arches and cabinetry. It makes the whole wall a truly unique focal point. Adding custom moldings to just about any area of your home can really set it apart.”

Go under cover with style.
“The moist heat from a radiator is highly desirable and worth preserving, but the radiator itself is anything but a showpiece. Custom-made radiator covers not only hide those unsightly pipes, but they can double as furniture such as end tables or benches. Available in three basic styles (traditional, prairie and shaker), it’s easy to find a design that fits with your décor. In addition to their ability to enhance the look of a room, the covers can actually add to a radiator’s efficiency. Our covers are insulated on the top, so heat is forced out into the room, rather than straight up to the ceiling, as it would be if the radiator were uncovered. You can even add custom covers to baseboard heating units.”

Make a grand entrance.
“If you want to make your home unforgettable, focus on the entryway. Custom and ornamental ironwork is a great way to make your staircase a focal point, and can be as simple or ornate as your budget allows. Creating a unified look from the outside in is also a popular trend right now, and coordinating door and hardware accents are a natural next step. We recently created a custom Juliet balcony over a customer’s front door with a matching trellis for climbing vines. It’s a great way to take the entry you have, and make it really stand out.”

Maximize Your Master Suite.
“Creating a great bathroom and dressing area can really add style to your home. In the bath, frameless or semi-frameless shower doors and steam shower enclosures give the space that ‘wow’ effect that will make you feel as if you’re stepping into a spa each and every morning. It’s the reason they’re the hottest trend right now in bathroom décor. Designing a beautiful, functional closet space can also add to the feeling of creating a peaceful environment. With a custom-designed closet system, everything has its place, and it’s all based on the client’s individual needs. A well-organized space takes the stress out of storing clothes and shoes, and changing your wardrobe over every season.”

Beautiful Built-Ins.
“Coffered ceilings, built-in cabinetry and crown moldings are just a few of the details that can make an ordinary room unique. We work closely with each client to create custom cabinetry that fits their budget and taste, and that our customers are happy with the quality and craftsmanship throughout the project. There is simply no substitute for fine craftsmanship if you are looking to add to the value and appeal of your home. Fine details that are handcrafted to fit the space can transform any room, entry or hallway and truly make your living space a home.”

Staircases that make a statement.
“Hammered or smooth textures, elegant scrolls, twists and intricate finishes are just some of the features that can be used to create a one-of-a-kind, show-stopping staircase. We can add custom balusters to an existing staircase to really define it and make it unique. Believe it or not, it’s relatively affordable to use the existing handrail and just replace wooden spindles with iron in just about any style and a choice of eight different finishes. The level of detail can match your taste and budget. So often, our customers have finished every other room in their home, but still have that builders-grade banister with white wooden spindles. When they see their finished staircase, they wonder why they waited so long.”

Glass block goes glam.
“Glass block has come a long way since those old basement windows you might remember. With an endless variety of textures, colors and patterns, clients can use this durable material in just about any application—traditional or contemporary. Whether it’s a shower wall [or] dividing wall … glass block is as practical as it is beautiful. Virtually any design can be molded into the glass, whether it’s an original image or a repeating pattern. Glass block provides privacy while letting in light, and it’s a great medium for creative lighting. One customer even used it as the base for a bar, and lit the whole thing from underneath the bar.”
