South Jersey Football Games of the Week

 Friday

St. Joseph Academy (2-1) at St. Augustine (2-1), 6. After a 35-24 loss to Holy Spirit, St. Joseph bounced back with a 38-21 win over Cherokee. The offense still needs to be more consistent. Senior Kevin Mayfield has rushed for 220 yards (5.1 avg.) and 2 Touchdowns. Jahmeer Cartagena has six receptions for 226 yards and 3 touchdowns. After losing an opening 34-7 to Maryland’s Archbishop Spalding, St. Augustine has defeated Notre Dame and Williamstown by combined 79-21 score. The winner of this game will remain in the run to be the top team in South Jersey.

Burlington Township (1-0) at Shawnee (1-1), 7. Burlington Township’s game last week was canceled due to COVID issues with Highland. Township opened with a 43-6 win over Hamilton. Quarterback Gage Miller threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Shawnee opened with an impressive 38-0 win over Kingsway, but lost last week to Millville, 49-36 in a game that wasn’t even that close. Senior Matt Welsey rushed for three touchdowns and threw for a touchdown pass for the Renegades against Millville.

Winslow Township (2-1) at Timber Creek (1-2), 7. This is a rivalry between two schools where the teams know each other well. After an opening loss to Woodbridge, Winslow Township has defeated Camden Catholic and Woodrow Wilson. In last week’s 32-30 win over Woodrow Wilson, Winslow Township trailed 30-20 last in the fourth quarter before scoring two touchdowns, with the winning score a 28-yard pass from to Trey Thorpe from Hamas Duren. After opening with losses to Red Bank Catholic and Camden, Timber Creek beat Moorestown, 35-0 last week as Donovan Leary threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns.

Saturday

Audubon (2-0) at Haddon Heights (2-0), 11. This is a key matchup between Colonial Conference schools that are competing in the WJFL Constitution Division. Heights has scored wins over Deptford and Princeton. Audubon opened with a 41-14 win over Burlington and is coming off last week’s impressive 31-6 victory over Cinnaminson. In the win over Cinnaminson, junior Scott Lynch threw for 226 yards and 3 touchdowns. Lynch played for Audubon as a freshman, moved to Florida as a sophomore and is now back with the Green Wave and he could be among the top quarterbacks in South Jersey.

Haddonfield (2-0) at Woodrow Wilson (1-1), 1. Haddonfield has played two relatively close games, opening with a 23-14 win over Pleasantville and last week a 27-23 victory over rival West Deptford. Carson Wolf’s 68-yard scoring pass to Jack Carson near the midway point of the fourth quarter provided the winning margin for the Bulldogs. Haddonfield will have a challenge in defending the Wilson passing game, led by senior Devin Kargman, among the top quarterbacks in South Jersey.
