With the holiday season fast approaching comes the generosity of spirit it inspires, which makes this time of year the perfect opportunity to celebrate those organizations that prioritize community-centric altruism every day.
We’re pleased to celebrate 21 nonprofits that are doing their part—and inspiring others—to care for their neighbors while making the region a better place to live, work and play.
SNJ Next
SNJ Next-–previously SNJ Millennials—embraces a revitalized mission that’s built on three pillars: financial support, mentorship and volunteerism. The organization hosts dynamic quarterly workshops, networking sessions and mixers, and resources that support business education, all of which aim to empower young professionals to grow, serve and lead as they pursue their full potential. In addition to supporting its membership, SNJ Next also hosts an annual 30 Under 30 Gala that celebrates emerging leaders who are already driving community impact. SNJ Next will be launching its new headquarters at Signature Workspace at 2000 Route 38, Suite 2210 in Cherry Hill, which will help not only expand its capacity but also host collaborative programming. Externally, the nonprofit is strengthening its partnerships with Samaritan and the Voorhees-Gibbsboro Lions Club to expand mentorship, health awareness and service initiatives across South Jersey. As part of its most recent philanthropic efforts, the nonprofit raised $4,609.46 for United Way of Gloucester County through Dancing with the Gloucester County Stars to support local families and community programs.

The New Jersey Clean Communities Council (NJCCC) strives to inspire business owners and customers to join its most recent environmental movement Skip the Stuff, wherein the council is spearheading a statewide outreach effort aimed at changing behaviors to tackle the alarming figures concerning single-use plastic utensil waste. NJCC is amplifying this message to further its reach by working with the business community as it teaches owners and managers alike to embrace sustainable practices that will save them money: Skip the Stuff will make it easier for restaurants and other businesses to go green and save green. As it’s been tackling the issue of litter for nearly 40 years, NJCCC has also educated the public about New Jersey’s single-use plastics law. Since the law was signed, it reports that more than 24 billion plastic bags have been kept out of waterways, parks and neighborhoods. Additionally, NJCCC oversees the distribution of $27.4 million in clean communities grants to local governments, has launched the statewide Reusable Bag Resource Center; and has created videos and PSAs to promote awareness about common types of preventable litter.

Last year, the organization invested more than $21 million to strengthen communities, and in 2025, it launched Camden Community Uplift to fight poverty and expand opportunity in Camden. Focused on two areas—benefits access and jobs access—the program builds a stronger ecosystem, removing barriers to economic mobility through community-driven solutions. United Way’s existing South Jersey investments include matched savings programs that help individuals achieve life-changing goals and the Lubert IDA Program.

The foundation created the Acorn Fund, which invests in college savings accounts for Salem county students, to which the foundation will make annual contributions from birth to 12th grade: Upon high school graduation, students can use that money to help pay for college-related costs. Since its inception in 2014, The Forman Action Foundation has invested over $3 million in nearly 1,600 Acorn Fund college savings accounts at no cost to Salem’s students and their families.

The alliance has launched an award-winning Heritage Tourism project consisting of a trail map, guide and rack cards for each site; it also hosts Camden County History Month every October, featuring more than 50 programs, tours, exhibits, reenactments, and more. The nonprofit organization also publishes an e-newsletter with events and programs, as well as a free annual historical magazine.

Doctors give new books to families, while advising parents about the importance of including books in families’ daily routines, reading aloud, and holding supportive and educational conversations: For nearly four decades, Reach Out and Read has turned routine checkups into a powerful tools for equity and connection as it promotes the behaviors that help parents and children build trust, strengthen language skills and nurture emotional health from birth. The nonprofit has reached 75,000 babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their families in low-income communities.

With a mixture of historical items, tours fueled by a powerful dialogue between visitors and guides, and a celebration of both local and international Black success, the museum provides context for what led freedom-seeking enslaved people through the county and how their legacies still impact the region today—all while shining a light on the stories history textbooks never tell and building upon founder Louise Calloway’s original collection and vision. It also hosts events that aim to honor and enlighten in equal measures, like a Juneteenth celebration that includes a Freedom Walk and, for 2026, will include skydivers representing every branch of the military.

It has already brought its mission of mitigating social isolation, loneliness and depression among the terminally ill to Samaritan Hospice in Mount Laurel, Lionsgate Skilled Nursing and Safe Haven in Voorhees, Spring Hills Assisted Living in Cherry Hill, and United Methodist Communities in Collingswood with a range of initiatives like service projects, social outreach events and donation drives that are all lovingly designed to uplift patients.

This Camden-based low-barrier shelter for unhoused individuals provides them with holistic, individualized support that not only recognizes their humanity but shows them the hospitality, empathy and respect every human being deserves as it supports and empowers them to achieve stability while reclaiming their lives. Guided by an overall societal vision where none of its South Jersey neighbors should be forced to sleep outside, its internal mission is driven by goals like building a greater capacity for its guests to navigate out of homelessness, fostering the kind of collaborations that focus on reducing chronic homelessness, and nurturing a healthy, equitable environment for all.

Guided by an overall societal vision where none of its South Jersey neighbors should be forced to sleep outside, its internal mission is driven by goals like building a greater capacity for its guests to navigate out of homelessness, fostering the kind of collaborations that focus on reducing chronic homelessness, and nurturing a healthy, equitable environment for all.
Literacy Volunteers of Camden County (LVCC)
This organization provides both one-on-one and small-group tutoring to the county’s adults performing at the lowest literacy levels, free of charge. No matter the format an individual chooses, all tutoring sessions are learner-centered and goal-oriented, as well as individualized to address the unique needs that each student demonstrates and supportively meet them where they are. Its programs include English as a second language (ESL), basic literacy tutoring in math and reading, and even topical workshops focused on financial literacy, family literacy, digital literacy and preparation for citizenship. Since its establishment in 1982, LVCC has trained more than 120 volunteer tutors, and annually enrolls over 170 ESL and basic-literacy students.
