Stoutland’s Departure A Major Loss for Eagles
Philadelphia has always prided itself as a true blue collar city and subsequently that reputation goes for the area’s sports fans.
The fans like nothing more than athletes who give maximum effort. The gritty player who always gets his uniform dirty is especially a favorite of the area sports fans.
So, it should come as no surprise that Eagles fans have shown public displeasure about the news that offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland was leaving the organization after 13 success-filled seasons.
Offensive linemen and coaches often work in relative anonymity. Not so with Stoutland and his players.
Stoutland was revered not only by his players, but the fans.
Not many areas would put an offensive line coach on such a high pedestal, but Stoutland was considered a true hero among Eagles fans.
And for good reason.
First off, the Eagles have won two Super Bowl championships in team history.
Want to guess the only person who was an assistant coach for both of them?
Stoutland coaches on Super Bowl winners from the 2017 and 2024 seasons.
During his 13 seasons, Stoutland who turns 64 this week, coached what became one of the top units in the NFL. That was certainly the case in 2024.
He was able to coach for three head coaches in Philadelphia, beginning with Chip Kelly, followed by Doug Pederson and during the last five years with Nick Sirianni.
In 2018, he was given the additional responsibility of being run game coordinator.
The Eagles were a running machine during their Super Bowl winning season in 2024.
This past year, the running game struggled, but Stoutland didn’t forget to coach in one year.
The exact reason he is leaving is not fully known.
However, the Eagles have named a new offensive coordinator, Sean Mannion and the staff is being revamped.
Stoutland, who was an offensive line coach at the University of Alabama before coming to the Eagles and was part of two national championship teams with the Crimson Tide, had never coached in the NFL before coming to Philadelphia.
Yet he helped develop players who didn’t exactly have the highest of profiles. Sure, Lane Johnson was the No. 4 pick in the country out of Oklahoma, but nobody was predicting that he would become the NFL’s top right tackle.
Jason Kelce was an obscure sixth round pick out of Cincinnati, who credits Stoutland with molding his career. It’s one that is likely to end in Canton, Ohio, home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Jordan Mailata had never played football before. He was a former rugby player from Australia who the Eagles drafted in the seventh round and handed over to Stoutland for development.
Mailata often says he attended Jeff Stoutland University. In 2024, Mailata was named a first-team All-Pro left tackle by Pro Football Focus and a second-team selection by the Associated Press.
Mekhi Becton was considered a first-round draft bust until he joined the Eagles for his one season in 2024. Becton became an integral part of the Super Bowl winning offensive line and earned a lucrative two-year free agent contract with the Los Angeles Chargers. After leaving the Eagles, he had a disappointing 2025 season. There are rumors that the Chargers may cut him.
Young players such as guard Landon Dickerson and center Cam Jurgens developed into Pro Bowl players under Stoutland.
In fact, Stoutland had a Pro Bowl player in each of his 13 seasons with the Eagles, with 27 selections overall.
This is not to suggest that the Eagles can’t have success under a new offensive coordinator. The offense was stale this past season and change could be positive.
Two things could be true, that the offense needed new life and that Stoutland will be greatly missed.
Stoutland will always be considered among the best assistant coaches in team history, which is why the news of his departure caused such a commotion among the Eagles faithful.
