Eastern Grad Michalski Enjoying His First Season At Cherry Hill American Legion
Recent Eastern graduate Carson Michalski was a two-year starter for one of the top baseball programs in South Jersey. He is working hard this summer while competing for Cherry Hill of the Camden County Senior American Legion League and will take his talents in the fall to Camden County College. This is his first year competing for Cherry Hill, the defending New Jersey state American Legion champion.
“I love playing for this team,” Michalski said. “It is really fun playing baseball here.”
It’s the type of experience he also enjoyed at Eastern.
“I loved playing high school, loved playing for (head coach) Rob Christ and he really taught me how to play,” Michalski said. “I came here (to Cherry Hill) and I just take everything that he taught me and just and using it here.”
Michalski was a two-year starter in the outfield for Eastern.
After batting .286 as a junior, he hit .341 this past season.
Michalski was around the varsity during his first two seasons before becoming an integral part of the team his final two seasons.
“Finally getting to play my junior year and just actually playing and being involved with it was amazing,” he said. “I mean, I was a little nervous going in my first year, but I feel like I was able to settle in and it was just amazing, I loved it.”
He is an outfielder who offers plenty of versatility, having played left, center and right while at Eastern.
Michalski is looking forward to playing at Camden County College for coach John Scanzano.
“I get to take my classes there and play ball there and hopefully get to go D3, D2 or maybe D1,” he said.
As with most junior college players, he is looking to develop his all-around skills needed to succeed at the next level.
“I get to build as a player and also get bigger and stronger and become more of a baseball player there,” he said. “I appreciate coach Scanzano for giving me my chance there.”
This summer Michalski has been a starter for a Cherry Hill team that includes players from Bishop Eustace, Cherry Hill West, Cherry Hill East, Highland, Haddonfield, Paul VI and Cherokee. Many of these were players that Michalski battled against in high school and now he is their teammate.
Cherry Hill general manager Bo Gray, a former star years ago at Cherry Hill West, says that Michalski has been a great addition.
“He’s definitely in the starting lineup and I will tell you, he is not only a good baseball player, but also a great kid,” Gray said.
Gray does a lot of homework during the high school season looking to recruit players on his team.
“When I look for players, character is a big part of our program and we want those who play the game the right way,” Gray said. “We just don’t want to go outside those lines, and Carson is one of those kids that just checks every box and he’s going to have a really good career with John Scanzano at Camden County.”
As a baseball player, Gray gives Michalski an impressive scouting report.
“He can hit for average, hit for power, he can run and he’s got a bazooka for an arm,” Gray said. “He has all the tools.”
And this summer Michalski is refining them with a steady diet of baseball facing the kind of competition that will surely aid him as he prepares for college competition.
