South Jersey H.S. Football Goes 5-for-5 In State Title Games
This is the fourth year that the NJSIAA has held state championships for public school teams, and this was by far the best effort by schools from the seven-county South Jersey area.
There were five South Jersey teams that reached the state championship game and each of them came out victorious. Many of the games were routs.
Winslow Township and Glassboro won their second successive state titles while Washington Township, Cedar Creek and Camden captured their first state crowns. (In later weeks we will review the seasons of all five state champions).
Here is the rundown of the South Jersey state championship wins:
Group 5: Washington Township 31, Passaic Tech, 12
Washington Township trailed 6-3 at halftime before turning it on in the final two quarters. Jaylen Robinson rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns, scoring on runs of 26 and 65 yards. Robinson played an outstanding two-way game as he was also a force at linebacker. Washington Township, along with Glassboro finished 14-0, the best records in South Jersey.

Group 3: Cedar Creek 34, Old Tappan 17
This was among the most impressive South Jersey showings. Old Tappan was the defending champion, had won 17 straight games and was considered the favorite. So much for that.

Gyan King, Jahmir Campfield joined Frenchmon Bethea each recorded interceptions in a stellar defensive effort. Aamir Dunbar scored Cedar Creek’s first two touchdowns on runs of 9 and 6 yards. He also rushed for 117 yards. Bethea threw for 55 yards and rushed for 47 yards and a score. There was simply too many dynamic plays and too much team speed for Old Tappan to contend with.
Group 2: Camden 27, Shabazz 8
Camden was led by a great defensive effort. Talib Shakir opened the scoring with a 54-yard interception return. Defensive back James Steele, who recorded two interceptions. Ibn Muhammad, a Syracuse commit, caught three passes for 49 yards and a touchdown, giving him 15 TDs for his career. Quarterback Ahmad Jones threw for 112 yards and two touchdowns.
