Defending champions

It was a big year for local teams as three teams from the seven-county South Jersey area won state champions – Gloucester Catholic in Non-Public B, Northern Burlington (Group 3) and Cherokee (Group 4).

Here are the defending South Jersey champions

SJ Group 1: Schalick 4, Audubon 3

SJ Group 2: Haddonfield 10, Collingswood 1

SJ Group 3: Toms River East 6, Toms River South 1

SJ Group 4: Cherokee 5, Eastern 4

SJ Non-Public A: Christian Brothers Academy 11, Red Bank Catholic 1

SJ Non-Public B: Gloucester Catholic 5, Bishop Eustace 1

Central Jersey Group 3: Northern Burlington 8, Brick Memorial 4

Biggest question

Can the three teams from South Jersey repeat as state champions?

It would be difficult, but far from impossible. These are expected to be three of the top teams in South Jersey. Two of the teams are paced by players who have committed to Mississippi State – Gloucester Catholic senior shortstop Noah Danza and Cherokee junior lefty Cooper Burti. Northern Burlington is led by senior pitcher-infielder Cole Marchetti, a Rutgers commit, who batted .462 and struck out 55 in 30 innings on the mound. These are among the teams that will also battle for the No. 1 spot in South Jersey.
