Tri-Cape Reaches Final of Carpenter Cup Softball Tournament
The Tri-Cape has been one of the more dominant recent teams in the 21st annual Carpenter Cup softball tournament, sponsored by the Phillies. Consisting of players from the Tri-County and Cape Atlantic Leagues, the Tri-Cape won championships in 2023 and 2025, in addition to earlier winning in 2014.
This year Tri-Cape made another spirited run, before losing to the Suburban One League/Bicentennial League, 9-6 in the championship game.
In the 16-team field, teams play three games in the first round (all in one day), with eight advancing to the finals. The Tri-Cape advanced to the quarterfinals on the final day and then beat Lehigh Valley, 5-4 and Berks L/L, 8-0 before the loss to SOL/BAL in the finals.
One of the best games was the victory over Lehigh Valley, which won the Carpenter Cup as recently as 2024.
Triton rising junior Ava Scuderi earned the win, allowing one earned run in three innings. Joselyn Bermudez, a rising junior at Timber Creek, earned the save by getting the final out.
Graillyn Weber, a rising senior from Pennsville, went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.
In the 8-0 semifinal win over Berks L/L, Timber Creek’s Bermudez earned the win with four shutout innings. Cailyn Centeno, a rising junior from Delsea, finished up with three shutout innings. (Carpenter Carp rules allow pitches to throw as many as four innings in a game).
Centeno also went 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Triton’s Scuderi was 3-for-3 with a run scored and RBI.
The championship game started out well for Tri-Cape, which took a 5-0 lead entering the bottom of the third inning. SOL/BAL tied the game with five runs in the third.
Tri-Cape took a 6-5 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by Pennsville’s Weber. SOL/BAL took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and added another in the sixth.
Centeno was 2-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Weber went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
The softball Carpenter Cup doesn’t allow graduating seniors, but there were still plenty of young players on this Tri-Cape team. If many of the players return, this should again be a major contender next season.
The other South Jersey teams competing, the Olympic/Colonial and Burlington County, didn’t advance after their one day of playing three games.
The Olympic/Colonial won its first game, 8-6 over Mercer County before losing 7-4 to Berks and 7-3 to Pioneer Athletic.
Burlington County lost 14-6 to Lehigh Valley, beat Delaware County, 7-3 before falling to the Philadelphia Catholic League/Inter-Ac, 6-2.
In the Burlington County win over Delaware County, Northern Burlington rising senior Allie Papol went 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and four RBIs. Florence rising senior Logan Saintz allowed just one run in four innings.
During the Olympic/Colonial’s win over Mercer County, Paul VI rising junior Maddie Fanelli went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
