Friends of the Sea to be Honored Saturday, April 3 2004, Alliance for a Living Ocean will be presenting the Friend of the Sea Award to Stafford Township resident John Spodofora and Long Beach Township resident Don Myers. The Friend of the Sea Award honors its recipients for their service, dedication, and generosity of spirit and self to the Alliance’s mission.

John Spodofora, a Vietnam Veteran and year ‘round resident of Stafford Township for 46 years is the developer of many award winning environmental ordinances, designs, and standards, which are currently being utilized on an international level. He has established numerous environmental programs and events, such as Stafford Township’s Adopt-A-Park, Adopt-A-Strom-Drain, and Adopt-A-Tree Programs. John was instrumental in the creation of Stafford Township’s Arbor Day celebration. Other awards presented to John include the “International Environmental Excellence Award”, the “EPA National Award Of Engineering Excellence”, and the “Presidential Teddy Roosevelt Conservation Award”.

Don Myers, a year ‘round resident of the Brant Beach section of Long Beach Township, is an active member of several environmental and educational organizations throughout Southern Ocean County and is involved in several area youth activity programs. Currently Beach Supervisor of the Long Beach Township Beach Patrol, Don is in charge of overseeing the Township’s beaches including the environmentally sensitive dunes and the Holgate division of the Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge. In his spare time Don enjoys sailing, fishing, wave skiing and spending time with his family.

The mission of the Alliance for a Living Ocean is to promote and maintain clean water and a healthy coastal environment through education, research and active participation. The Alliance recognizes the need to manage our watershed, bay and ocean holistically since all water flows from “the raindrop to the ocean”. The Alliance has members spanning the New Jersey/Pennsylvania/New York tri-state area and educates thousands of South Jersey residents and visitors through educational outreach programs and activities all year ‘round. These programs include summer field trips to environmental sites, in-classroom presentations and outside field trips for area schools; beach cleanups and storm drain stenciling.

The Friend of the Sea Award dinner will be held at The Ocean Acres Country Club in Manahawkin, NJ at 6:30pm. Dinner tickets are $55 each and may be purchased through March 24 by calling Alliance for a Living Ocean at (609) 492-0222.
