All-Night Concert A music lover's dream and the first of its kind at Rowan University, the Department of Music's Super Marimba Concert brings music to the university's new planetarium on April 30, 2004, beginning at 10 p.m. and lasting until 8 a.m. the following day. The planetarium's facilities will provide guest artist Payton MacDonald and the Percussion Ensemble with a unique visual accompaniment. This continuous, all-night musical event encourages audience members to come and go as they choose. The ten-hour performance features live alternating performances by MacDonald and the Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Professor Dean Witten, include complementing visual shows transmitted on the planetarium dome. For this concert program, MacDonald has developed a new language on the marimba using a digital looping device. Writing a series of pieces allows him to build textures of incredible density and sophistication. MacDonald regularly performs with Alarm Sound, a professional new-music group, and Verederos, a flute and percussion duo regarded by The New York Times as "the future of classical music." With Verederos, MacDonald has performed concerts nationwide and recorded two CDs; Verederos won the 2002 National Flute Association chamber music competition. Numerous professional and academic ensembles have performed his music in the U.S., Japan, Canada and Eastern Europe. MacDonald also directs the percussion and world music programs as assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin. Consisting of percussion majors and graduate students, the Percussion Ensemble has performed at many universities and numerous local public schools. The group has recorded two CDs and regularly commissions new music under the direction of Witten. The performance is free and open to the public. The Planetarium is located in the Rowan Science building on the campus of Rowan University. For more information, call the box office at (856) 256-4545.
