Shawnee Students Give Relief

The National Honor Society recently concluded a t-shirt sale whose proceeds will go to the families of the firefighters, police officers, and rescue workers who died in the line of duty September 11th, courtesy of the fund established by the Medford Police Department.
Approximately 400 "It’s a Matter of Pride" t-shirts total were sold during lunch periods, football games, and back-to-school night. The t-shirt sale raised approximately $1500. NHS president Kelly McFadden was pleased with the student response. "The sports teams were especially great. I know for a fact that the entire field hockey team bought shirts and wore them on Pride Day. Same for cheerleaders." Shawnee senior Corey Crouch took it upon her own to help out, organizing a benefit concert with all proceeds going directly to the victims of the September 11th tragedy. "I wanted to contribute to the relief efforts of the September 11th attacks," remarked Crouch, "however I did not have sufficient monetary resources to make much of a difference on my own." So Crouch called up a few of her friends and staged the relief show.
The concert, which took place in October at Freedom Park in Medford, was played by several local acts including SGR, Don’t Look Down, and 37 Slurp, all of which were willing to perform free of charge. The concert raised approximately $1400, and is considered a success by its humble organizer. "I feel much better now that I can say that I did something to help out, and plus it was a lot of fun." The spirit of community is alive and well in local affairs, and obviously will not be crushed these trying times.
