Deirdre Flint Wows `Em Again
For the uninitiated, Deirdre Flint is a comedic genius and folksinger/songwriter who tours nationally and yes, internationally even (she's headed to the UK later this month). But don't be fooled - Deirdre is nobody's typical folksinger.
She is spunky, sarcastic, and witty, with an amazing ability to cut to the always-humorous quick of life's ups, downs, and rites of passage.
She opened the evening with At Least He Was Mine, an upbeat number about dysfunctional relationships. With King of the Rollerama she moved into the theme for the first set - the angst of adolescence. After modulating the mood of the evening with a newer number, the poignant Bring Caroline Back to Me, Deirdre rounded out the set with a sampling of old favorites including the upbeat Too Darn Old and the camp favorites The Bridesmaid Dress Song and Cheerleader, winding up with the audience-interactive Jenny of 100 Dates, in which most appropriately for the theme, the crowd opted for the "Post-Adolescent Fantasy" ending.
After a brief intermission in which she chatted with the audience, she returned with another new number, Nancy Drew, a paean to the heroine of the young adult sleuthing series. (She even rhymed "Hannah Gruen"!) In the second set she interspersed more new numbers with perennial favorites such as Food, Past Life Regressed, 1-900-Score-A-Date, and We Fit Right. The mellow and introspective I Want to Grow Old with You continued the homage to soulmates started by the title track from her CD, Shuffleboard Queens.
Her final new offering, Grandma's House (Over the River and through the Woods), a bittersweet ode to the inevitable cycle of life, was a favorite of the evening. In keeping with tradition, Deirdre closed with the wickedly funny The Boob Fairy - a song about a young girl's dream of that magical visit from the title character.
