The Horse Doctor is Coming

by Press Release-Howell Living History Farm | Mar 9, 2003
The Horse Doctor is Coming When is a 3/4 ton workhorse a chicken?

When the doctor and dentist come ... maybe.

Visitors and horses will find out on Saturday, March 15 when the horse doctor and dentist make their rounds at the farm.

Besides seeing some of the tools, techniques and products that relate to horse care as it was practiced during the farm's circa 1900 time period, visitors will be able to meet a veterinarian and horse dentist, and even try their own hand at a bit of horse doctoring.

"Kids will be able to listen to a horse's heart through an antique stethoscope, look inside a horse's mouth, and even rub cream into a cracked hoof," explains Kathy Brilla, the farm's program coordinator. From noon until 1pm, visitors can watch the horse doctor give spring shots and worming medicine to the farm's draft horses.

A children's craft program, "Horseshoe Napkin Holder" will be offered in the farmhouse from 11am-3pm. There is a $3 materials fee. Participation is on a walk-in basis. Groups of eight or more must pre-register.

Saturday Hours: 10am - 4pm, programs from 11am - 3pm. Sunday Hours: Noon - 4pm, April through November for self-guided tours only. Weekday Hours: 10am - 4pm, Tuesday - Friday, February through November. Closed on Mercer County holidays and Easter. Free admission & parking; Fee for Children's Crafts, Maze.
