Great Plans for the Summer! The weather has finally started getting nice, the snow is almost all gone for the season, and it's time to start thinking about what you're going to do this summer! To help you out, the Alliance for a Living Ocean (ALO) has released their schedule of educational programs for the Summer of 2003. This year the Alliance offers a different activity every weekday all summer, along with some special events you should be sure not to miss.

Mondays, through August 18, the Alliance offers Stories By The Sea, a free story & activity hour for children ages 3 to 7 at the Long Beach Island Community Activities Center in Beach Haven.

Tuesdays, the Alliance offers Inherit The Earth Field Trips to one of eight environmental sites throughout the South Jersey Shore. These trips depart from the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce in Ship Bottom at 9am and return at 1:30pm. This year’s trips include:

July 29 - The Wetlands Institute
One of the many offerings of the Wetlands Institute is the Salt Marsh Trail featuring unparalleled views of migratory birds, fiddler crabs and other creatures are up close and personal. The Institute also hosts an aquarium featuring over a dozen exhibits with live marsh animals as well as a special “teacher’s tank” with live horseshoe crabs, sea stars and lots more.

August 5 - MATES Wet Lab and Boat Ride
The MATES program is Ocean County Vo-Tech’s Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science program. Their facilities host a wet lab with live marine specimens. This trip includes a guided environmental boat tour of the Toms River.

August 12 - Jenkinson’s Aquarium Behind The Scenes Tour
Jenkinson’s is home to creatures such as Atlantic sharks, Pacific sharks, coral reefs, penguins, alligators and seals. In this special tour guests will have the opportunity to get up close to animals from around the globe. Another attraction, the touch tank, allows visitors to touch live animals ranging from a sea star to a juvenile shark!

August 19 - Whitesbog Village
Historic Whitesbog Village is a turn-of-the-century company town nestled in the internationally recognized Pinelands National Reserve at the headwaters of Rancocas Creek. Whitesbog includes 3,000 acres of cranberry bogs, blueberry fields, reservoirs and pine forests.

Wednesdays, through August 20, the Alliance offers Eco-Tours of a Barrier Island. These trolley tours explore Long Beach Island from the dunes to the wetlands. Departing from the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce in Ship Bottom at 9am.

Thursdays, through August 21, the Alliance hosts Twilight At The Bay, a free hour long program of music, games, a touch tank, and entertainment at the shore of Little Egg Harbor Bay. Beginning 7 pm at the Beach Haven Bay Beach.

Fridays, through August 22, the Alliance presents Inlet Lore, a free outdoor presentation and beach walk filled with facts about Barnegat Inlet and Barnegat Lighthouse State Park.

August 2 is The Third Annual FantaSea Festival, from 10am to 4pm at Veteran’s Bicentennial Park in Beach Haven. The festival will host over 75 arts and crafts vendors, with many environmental education activities and children’s activities all day long, also featuring food vendors and live entertainment.
