SJ Schools: Shawnee HS

by Melissa Samuelson | Jun 23, 2003
SJ Schools: Shawnee HS Shawnee High School offers a broad spectrum of academic and co-curricular activities to challenge the minds of its students. Students can choose from academic programs of varying levels of difficulty. The programs include honors, academic, modified academic, basic/remedial, and special education. Other programs include advanced placement in English, chemistry, physics, biology, calculus, European history, and psychology; co-op with supervised part-time employment; and a special education program for students with handicap status.

Shawnee also offers an exciting co-curricular program in many areas of athletics and arts. The school administration places heavy importance on participation in these activities to develop into mature adults with awareness of the importance of social activities.

An important activity at Shawnee is the Web Club, which maintains the design and content of the school web site. Under the direction of the faculty and president Kevin Leacock, members take time after school to update the site to better communicate the school’s mission, activities, and other information to site visitors. There is also information for the media department online so students can find information for school projects and keep up-to-date on current events.

Another important activity is the district’s LDTV (Lenape District Television) and Shawnee’s participation to provide high-quality programming during their allotted time slot. The show ‘Shawnee Extra’ is a news program dedicated to bringing Shawnee news to the Lenape community. The program originated more than ten years ago and was brought back during the 2001-2002 school year. Produced by the Shawnee Media Television Technology II class, the show airs edited versions of the program on the district channel 19. Students also produce segments for the Renegade morning show, maintain the bulletin board and film school events that air on the local school channel.

Each year, the district holds the LDTV awards to highlight the video accomplishments of students in the district. This year, Shawnee students earned several accomplishments during the awards ceremony held on May 15th. Congratulations to the following winners:
* Best Newspak - Alex Swift for Senior Citizen Computer Classes
* Best Graphics - Dave Vendette for Student of the Month segment
* Best Sports Newspak - Josh Brilliant for Boys Lacrosse
* Best Interview - Peyton Ebbeson for Student of the Month segment
* Best ESA - Bob Rowe, Jack Lane, Alex Samuelian, Lauren Hower, Lindsey Staller for ‘Don’t Become a Statistic”

Each month, Shawnee selects one student per class and honors them with the coveted Student of the Month title. The selected students show exceptional academic standing, participate in several activities, and are great role models for other students. Congratulations to recent Student of the Month winners, Jennifer Nazarethian, Luke Bonus, Ashley Cook and Mia Davis.

Shawnee also enjoys the athletic achievements of its students. Shawnee athletes must remain in good academic standing to participate and learn the importance of health, physical fitness, and team-building skills. Congratulations to the following athletes and teams for their effort in the 2002 and 2003 school year:

Shawnee starting pitcher Sean Doolittle made school history when he struck out twenty-three batters to capture the Shawnee Renegades first Group IV Baseball Champion title. The team struggled through postponed games and waiting through other team finals to finally play their hardest to make Shawnee history. Go Team!

The Shawnee Basketball Team participated at the Olympic-Cape Challenge to benefit the Shoot Down Cancer Foundation at Hammonton High School. The two-day event was shortened to one day due to inclement weather. Despite the odds, Shawnee still pulled through and scored a victory against Holy Spirit. The Olympic Cape Challenge is known to allow South Jersey’s best teams to shine and Shawnee proved that they are number one!

Shawnee High School is located at 600 Tabernacle Road in Medford. For more information, contact (609) 654-7544 or visit www.lr.k12.nj.us.
