Rutgers Crews Win at Regatta

Rutgers Crews Win at Regatta The Rutgers-Camden alumni rowing team overcame rain and the choppy waters of the Schuylkill River to claim first-place honors during the second annual Cheese Steak Regatta, sponsored by the Masters Rowing Association, on June 7.

The Rutgers-Camden men's eight and mixed eight teams both won in their divisions.

According to Chuck Mannella, a team member and director of alumni relations at Rutgers-Camden, "The men's eight held their own racing against the prestigious established Philadelphia rowing clubs of Boat House Row." He notes that the media age of the Rutgers-Camden team is 50.

The Cheesesteak Regatta occurred just one week after the Rutgers-Camden crew's first-ever voyage on the Cooper River during the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta.

The Rutgers team began training in March under the guidance of Jamie Stack, who coaches the Rutgers-Camden student crew team. The alumni team is led by captain Sam Versella, a 1983 Rutgers-Camden graduate and resident of HADDONFIELD. Crew member Mike Persons, president of the Rutgers University-Camden Alumni Association and a resident of VOORHEES, is optimistic about the continued success of the new crew team.

"This is a small step for Rutgers University alumni in general and a giant leap for Rutgers-Camden alumni in particular," says the 1975 graduate of the Camden campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
