Free Lead-Safe Renovation Classes

by Press Release | Nov 2, 1980
Free Lead-Safe Renovation Classes The market for home improvement is near its all-time high. Americans spent a record $280 billion on remodeling and renovation in 2005. With home prices falling and the economy tightening, homeowners are forecasted to continue investing in renovation projects.

As these trends continue, however, NJ residents face the risk of exposing their families to the harmful side effects of lead poisoning. The chief source of childhood lead poisoning—invisible lead dust—can be spread by home improvement jobs, interior or exterior painting, or general contracting work.

Almost 175,000 NJ families live in a home with hazardous levels of lead. Many are unaware of it. Any home built before 1978 is at risk.

Through a grant from the NJ Department of Community Affairs/Lead Outreach and Education Program, the Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative will host three free lead safety courses in the month of November.

Entitled “Lead-Safe Building Maintenance Practices,” these conferences can help educate contractors, building professionals, landlords, and do-it-yourself-homeowners on lead-safe maintenance and renovation techniques. The free, day-long class is conducted by qualified lead safety educators. Classes are HUD-approved, and can help attendees meet some mandatory state property maintenance code requirements. Lunch and continental breakfast are included.
