SJ Schools: Sterling High School Sterling High School provides a challenging academic environment to Somerdale-area students, as well as a myriad of physical and co-curricular activities that are on the cutting edge of technology. The school has 515 multi-media computers with Internet access. Nine computer labs are available for different disciplines including math and language. The use of the Internet as a research tool is emphasized in the curriculum. The school also offers programming classes in Visual Basic, C++, Java and HTML. There are also courses to teach general Microsoft Office applications such as Excel and PowerPoint.

Sterling also houses its own TV studio, and offers courses in television production. Through local channel 19, students can create a programming schedule including plays, athletic events, and school receptions. The station also has a community bulletin board with local news and events. All programs are run by the students with the guidance of faculty members.

This year, Sterling enjoyed the success of its various activities as well as the excitement of its students receiving national recognition for outstanding academics. Congratulations to the following students for the 2002-2003 school year:

Sterling senior Timothy Hodge had something to celebrate when he scored an outstanding 1360 on his SAT, achieving a perfect 800 on the math portion of the test. Tim was a math genius throughout high school, participating in honors algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus. He plans to use his math skills by pursuing a career designing computer games and programs.

Senior Karen Milideo became the first student to receive the Glaxo SmithKline National Merit Scholarship in the school’s 44-year history. Karen is a member of the National Honor Society and the Foreign Language Honor Society. She also received the Camden County High School Music Award for the last four years. She was recently a “student of the month” for April. A well-rounded student, Karen focuses on her academics as well as the Marching Band, Concert Band, and Orchestra. She was named to the All Colonial Conference Band in tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. She also acts in the Drama productions and ran track during her junior and senior years.

Sterling High School Interact Club planned a Senior Citizen’s Prom on May 9th. The evening had a patriotic theme, with a musical tribute to Irving Berlin, performed by the Triton’s musical group the Silvertones. Attendants were treated to a sit-down dinner, dancing, and prizes. Congratulations to Club President, Sarah Torpey, and Michele Wharton who did an amazing job designing this year’s event.

Sterling High School also held several activities this past school year to benefit the community as well as its students. Highlights included the following:

In May, Sterling’s faculty was honored by more than 400 renaissance students in the Staff Appreciation Breakfast. The students showed their appreciation to those teachers and faculty members who assisted in their strive for excellence.

Sterling held a hybrid celebration this May promoting the arts and sciences. Formerly named the Interdistrict Greater Arts Festival, the show was titled Art and Sciences: Perfect Together. An art auction was also held to benefit the Dave LaGrange Fund. The festival was a great way to promote the talent of students as well as benefit a great cause.

Sterling High School is located on 501 South Warwick Road in Somerdale. For more information, please contact (856) 784-1333 or visit www.sterling.k12.nj.us.
