Kick Off Summer with Unlocking of Ocean

Kick Off Summer with Unlocking of Ocean New Jersey Executive Director of Travel and Tourism Grace Hanlon will join state, county and local officials in kicking off the 2011 summer season at the Wildwoods’ Unlocking of the Ocean Ceremony at noon on Friday, May 27. A large ornate key will be used to ‘unlock’ the ocean, and initiate the summer season. In addition, the sky above the beach will be filled with colorful creations as the 26th Annual Wildwoods International Kite Festival takes flight. Close to 300 elementary school kids will attend the Unlocking of the Ocean ceremony and fly the kites made during the morning Kite-making Workshop for the first time to kick off the annual international festival.

WHO: New Jersey Executive Director of Travel and Tourism Grace Hanlon, along with elected state, county and local officials and business & civic organization representatives from Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and North Wildwood, will be joined by second grade students from the Glenwood Avenue Elementary, Crest Memorial and the Margaret Mace Elementary Schools.

WHAT: The Unlocking of the Ocean Ceremony marks the official start of the 2011 summer season and kicks off of the 26th Annual International Kite Festival. The ceremony will be followed by brief remarks from officials. Immediately after unlocking the ocean, children from local schools will kick off the International Kite Festival by flying their newly made kites on the beach.

WHEN: Unlocking of the Ocean Ceremony to be held at noon on Friday, May 27. The children's kite making workshop begins at 10am inside the Wildwoods Convention Center.

WHERE: On the beach behind the Wildwoods Convention Center, located at Burke Avenue & the Boardwalk in Wildwood, NJ.
