Flyers Outskate Red Wings

Flyers Outskate Red Wings Detroit, which has the NHL`s best record since the All-Star break, had won four straight. The Red Wings have lost only three of 25 games and hadn`t been outscored in the third period in 20 games.

It was the 10th shutout of the season for Philadelphia`s Roman Cechmanek`s, one fewer than NHL leader Dominik Hasek of Buffalo.

Manderville took a pass from Paul Ranheim, skated from the right circle and slipped a shot across in front of goalie Chris Osgood at 2:42 of the third.

Manderville has five goals since ending a 122-game scoring drought on Feb. 7. His last goal before then was Oct. 2, 1999, while playing for Carolina.

Philadelphia outshot Detroit 31-21, holding the Red Wings to just four shots in the second period. Detroit spent much of the frame killing penalties, after being called for four while Philadelphia had just one.

The Flyers were 0-4 with the man-advantage, including a 5-on-3 power play for 1:05 midway through the second period.

It was the first win for Philadelphia without injured center Keith Primeau, who is expected to be out three weeks _ missing at least the first round of the playoffs _ with a left knee sprain.

The Flyers called up center Derek Plante from their AHL affiliate to replace Primeau and center Daymond Langkow, who is out indefinitely with broken bones in his feet.

Detroit`s Nicklas Lidstrom was injured early in the second period after he was slashed in the face by Ranheim`s skate in front of the Detroit net. He returned at the start of the third period with stitches across his nose and forehead.

Notes:
Martin Lapointe ended a four-game scoring streak and five-game point streak. ... Detroit leads the NHL with 81 power-play goals. ... Philadelphia had lost three straight to Detroit, but hasn`t lost to the Red Wings at home since Jan. 25, 1997. The Flyers lead the all-time series 51-42-21.
