SURF WIN A THRILLER
Keith Gordon`s fly ball to right bounced off Paul Esposito`s glove, scoring two runners and giving the Atlantic City Surf (15-14) a 7-6 edge over the Somerset Patriots (17-9) Monday night at The Sandcastle. The win increases the Surf`s streak to five games. Somerset`s Billy Hall scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning on a wild pitch by Atlantic City`s Randi Mallard to give the Patriots a 5-4 lead. Gordon went 2-4, including his league-leading ninth home run. Shortstop Pablo Martinez went 3-3 with three stolen bases for Somerset. Hall scored again in the ninth to make it a 6-4 lead.
The Surf rebounded to score three in the bottom of the ninth off reliever John Briscoe. Jorge Morales went 2-4 with two home runs for the Surf, including a shot in the ninth to make it a one-run deficit. The winning pitcher was John Mangieri (2-0), John Briscoe (2-1) receives the loss. The series concludes Tuesday night, 7:05, at The Sandcastle.
