BEARS DROP SURF

BEARS DROP SURF The Newark Bears (22-14) defeated the Atlantic City Surf (20-16) 7-5 on a windy Monday night at the Sandcastle. Surf second baseman Jack Joffrion committed a costly error in the fourth inning, allowing two Newark runners to cross the plate. After Surf starter Pat Dunham hit the next batter, Marc Fink blasted a two run homer to give the Bears the lead for the rest of the contest.

Newark starter and former Cincinnati Red Jack Armstrong (3-3) threw seven innings, letting up four earned runs while striking out three Surf batters. Former big-league slugger Jose Canseco was not a factor, as he struck out three times and walked three times.

Keith Gordon remained hot for the Surf, as he tied the team record with three doubles. Former Phillie John Kruk threw out the first pitch of the game and signed autographs for the 1,325 fans in attendance.

The Surf will start a three game series with Lehigh Valley starting Tuesday night at 7 PM at the Sandcastle.
