9-11 Memorial Inspires Reflection

As a part of Medford’s remembrance, reflection and response to the life-altering events of September 11, 2001, the Medford Cultural Arts Commission (MCAC) and Friends of the Medford Cultural Arts Commission (FMCAC) created a permanent September 11 Memorial/tribute in Freedom Park. The memorial is comprised of a bronze sundial, permanently mounted on a natural boulder bearing a plaque inscribed with the words “September 11, 2001 REMEMBER, REFLECT, RESPOND” which was the theme of the remembrance program held in Freedom Park on the first anniversary of this natural tragedy.
The sundial is placed in a circular bed of daylilies, with a circle of stone pavers surrounding the flowerbed. A seating area faces the sundial garden to encourage passer-by to stop and rest, thereby enhancing the impact of the Memorial.
The MCAC feels that the use of the sundial has many depths of meaning pertaining to the passage of time and, combined with the simple text of “REMEMBER, REFLECT, RESPOND,” invites observers to pause and reflect anew with each passing. The use of the stone base is connotes strength and permanence, and is consistent with the natural feeling of Freedom Park. The pavers provide a small path to walk around the garden, and visually link the bench and sundial garden.
