Trenton Thunder News BINGHAMTON – The Mets utilized a five-run fifth inning to turn a two-run deficit into a three-run lead, and the Mets defeated the Thunder, 6-3, in front of 3,573 fans at Binghamton Municipal Stadium. The win was the Mets’ 15th straight victory, tying the Atlanta Braves for the longest winning streak in professional baseball this season.

Dicky Gonzalez (10-5) collected his fourth straight win, as he allowed three runs, seven hits, no walks, and seven strikeouts in seven innings. Joel Bennett (3-2) suffered the loss, as he gave up eight hits, six runs, five earned, two walks, and two strikeouts in four and one-third innings. Juan Cerros got the final three outs for his third save.

The Thunder scored first, in the fourth inning, when RJ Johnson began the frame with a solo home run, his fifth of the season. Jorge DeLeon was hit by a pitch with one out, and Virgil Chevalier followed it up with a single. Shea Hillenbrand then singled to score DeLeon, and the Thunder had a 2-0 lead.

Alex Escobar began the Mets’ fourth with an infield single, and went to third on an error. Ty Wigginton’s sacrifice fly knocked in Escobar, and it was 2-1 Thunder.

With one out in the top of the fifth, Damian Sapp cracked a solo home run to rightfield, his fourth, and the Thunder had a 3-1 lead.

Jason Phillips singled and Brian Cole doubled to start the Mets’ fifth inning. Gabby Martinez then tripled in both runners to tie the game at 3-3. Allen Dina followed it up with a single to bring Martinez home, and the Mets had a 4-3 lead. John Tamargo sacrificed Dina to second, and Alex Escobar walked. After a wild pitch, Dan Held singled home Dina and Escobar, and the Mets’ lead had grown to 6-3.

The Thunder (54-60) and the Mets (64-47) will play again on Wednesday, August 9. The Thunder will throw Nerio Rodriguez (3-6) against the Mets’ Juan Aracena (3-2). Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Binghamton Municipal Stadium.
