The Garden State Chorale, Inc., is a non-profit Southern New Jersey community choral group that has been performing for over 75 years. The Garden State Chorale is believed to be the oldest community chorus in the state of New Jersey. Even during war time the group performed canteen shows for the troops. The mission of the Garden State Chorale is to participate, promote public interest, and strive for excellence in the presentation of multifaceted musical entertainment. The Garden State Chorale is comprised of approximately 50 auditioned singing members from Camden, Burlington and Gloucester counties. The Garden State Chorale has been entertaining South Jersey audiences since spring 1932 when the Laurel Springs Men's Chorus and the Haddonfield Women's Chorus merged to become the Haddonfield Choral Society. The Chorale’s first performance was a Spring Concert in 1932 on Haddonfield High School’s stage. In 1934 the Chorale performed its first Broadway musical, “The Mikado.” In 1946, Lewis Shearer assumed the role of Director and his wife, Elsie, who sang in the chorus, became accompanist. As a well-deserved tribute to the Shearers' 27 years of loyalty and dedication, the Choral Society was renamed The Lewis Shearer Chorale in 1972. The present name was adopted in 1992 at Mr. Shearer's request after his resignation for health reasons the previous year.
