Marlton Native Takes Runner Up Honors

Mascio’s entry, illustrations in watercolor, ink, color pencil, acrylic and oil paint for the children’s book Faces of Fantastica, netted him $500. Mascio, who graduated from Cherokee High School in 2002, will receive the cash prize at the UArts Awards Ceremony on May 23, just one day before he graduates with a bachelor of fine arts degree.
Other competition entries included, among others, illustrated snowboards and skateboards, book and magazine covers, graphic novels and music packaging and promotional materials.
Endowed by its namesake in 1964, the William H. Ely Award for Excellence in Illustration is a juried exhibition, which is open to seniors in the University’s Illustration Department and awards cash prizes to the top three entries.
The Illustration Department at UArts prepares its students for entry into the fields of book and periodical publishing, promotion, advertising, design and specialty fields. Students may concentrate on a studio, a digital or a pictorially-oriented illustration curriculum.
The University of the Arts is the nation’s first and only university dedicated to the visual, performing and communication arts. Its 2,300 students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs on its campus in the heart of Philadelphia’s Avenue of the Arts. Its history as a leader in educating creative individuals spans more than 130 years.
