Central and S. Jersey Race for the Cure
Locally sponsored by Six Flags, Bristol-Myers Squibb and L’Oreal, the event attracts over 20,000 participants, survivors and activists. The Race for the Cure is the largest 5K race in New Jersey. More than a walk and run, the Race brings together breast cancer survivors, loved ones, supportive community members, and local organizations for one cause – to save lives. It is a day of hope, remembrance, and inspiration for all. C. Vivian Stringer, Head Coach of Rutgers Women’s Basketball is the honorary chair for this year’s Race.
“We accomplished a lot over the past 14 years. We’ve raised $17 million investing $3.3 million to support cutting-edge research and over $10 million into local community breast health education and screening programs. But there is still much work to be done.” stated Nancy Healey, Executive Director of Komen Central and South Jersey Affiliate. “The two greatest risk factors for breast cancer are being a woman and getting older. This is a disease that knows no boundaries. We are committed to increasing mammograms in order to save lives through early detection.”
This year’s event is expected to raise $1.8 million dollars. The Race may be one day in October, but its impact is felt all year long. Founded on a promise, Susan G. Komen for the Cure works to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. The organization’s vision is a world without breast cancer. Of the net proceeds from the Race, 25% will support national breast cancer research programs and the remaining 75% will stay in the local community. This year, the affiliate has invested $1.4 million into the local community and hope to reach 55,000 women with breast cancer screening and education programs.
The Central and South Jersey Affiliate thanks all of the participants, donors and sponsors who make this event a success. Additional local sponsors include Johnson & Johnson, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, Commerce Bank, Dick’s Sporting Goods, On the Border, Wegmans, the Women’s Club at Westlake, the Lakewood BlueClaws, LifeCell Corporation, Novartis Oncology, sanofi-aventis, Blue Point Grill, Starbucks, GE Healthcare, Waterford Crystal, NJEA, King Pharmaceuticals, MDAdvantage, Re/MAX of New Jersey, Covance, Pfizer, Lackland Self-Storage, the Westin Princeton, and Princeton HealthCare System.
This is the second year that the Race will be held at Six Flags Great Adventure. As part of their support of Komen, Six Flags will offer half price of a regular admission to the theme park on Race day to registered Race participants. $5 of each admission will be donated back to Komen by Six Flags.
