SJ Web Site Reviews - Cape May

SJ Web Site Reviews - Cape May I decided we needed to get some fresh air, but instead of doing the usual walk around the neighborhood, how about researching some naturally beautiful South Jersey spots, and then taking a hike? This weather can’t last forever, and the bright days and less than frigid air are calling me outside. I usually think of the boardwalk for a great way to stroll and enjoy a scenic route, but why not try something different at the shore? In carousing around the Internet I found some really cool and different places – and they’re close enough to see in a day. Here’s the plan: if it’s chilly or inclement you go with Plan B; a nice day warrants Plan A. Of course, you have to devise the plans yourself, but I’ll give you plenty of options. You have to have a starting point, and after many false starts I found this terrific link to the Cape May Lighthouse. If you want to walk along the beach, this is a real treat as a destination. The view from one of the portholes is incredible, and don’t miss clicking on “views from the top” – but don’t spend too much time surfing, take a drive out there and see for yourself.

Since you’re already in Cape May, here are some other options: The Cape May Zoo, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, and the Cape May Point Bunker.

The zoo sits on 234 wooded acres and is home to approximately 180 different species of animals. It is a super place to meander through woodsy paths while gazing at some pretty exotic creatures – very unlike the cats, dogs, and occasional squirrel you’ll see in your usual community hikes. Some exhibits include The Reptile House, The African Savanna, The Aviary, and many more.

Visit the Cape May-Lewes Ferry site for all the information you will need to plan a visit or to hit the great shopping in Delaware.

The Ferry terminal in itself is a treat, housing the Heroes and Hellcats exhibit, with free admission. Fighter planes, photos, and lots of WWII artifacts are featured.

Focusing more on history and South Jersey, the Cape May Point Bunker is in close proximity to the Lighthouse, and provides an interesting view for your walking tour. As the bunker is currently sinking into the sea, there is some interest in restoring this WWII protector of the South Jersey Coast - from a time when U-boats and enemy ships were a reality. Now, of course, it’s said to be haunted… so read up on the history, then stop to gaze and ponder during your fall hike.

This should provide enough information for you to strike out and explore on your next day off, and I’ll even provide you with one more necessity: a map.

That should do it – here’s to having a great time exploring the history of South Jersey coupled with its natural beauty.
