NCAA Signings at Eastern Regional HS This month, Eastern Regional High Schools held its fourth annual "National Signing Day," a reception at which student athletes celebrate their commitment to colleges for next year. On Wednesday, February 6, 2002, six student-athletes, along with their parents and coaches, committed to the college of their choice for next year: Lori Hillman-Field Hockey, Michigan; Lance Evans-Football, Virginia; Dominick Mejia-Basketball, Rutgers; Alana Vivolo-Lacrosse, Boston College; Joseph Udine-Baseball, Univ. of Penn; Kate Ryno-Field Hockey, Appalachian State; Erica Evangelisti-Lacrosse, Monmouth * (*not available to attend the event)

At the Signing Day event, the athletes and their parents were interviewed in the school’s television studio for broadcast later in the semester.

Dr. James Talarico, Vice-Principal of Athletics, said that between five and seven Eastern Regional students are successfully recruited by colleges annually. Often, these students receive partial or full scholarships to further their education and continue their athletic careers.

During their high school athletic careers, many student athletes work hard to win the pride of their school and their community. Some of them also catch the attention of college recruiters. College coaches contact and interview the athletes they would like to have play for their college program, and the athletes visit the colleges to determine if the college’s education and sports programs are what they are looking for. A successful match is exciting for everyone.

They are not only good athletes, they have been recruited by some highly academic schools, said Talarico of this year’s six. “We’re very proud. It’s a tribute to our student athletes and our community.”
