SJ Kids: Springfield School Winners!

SJ Kids: Springfield School Winners! Students in the Springfield Township School have spent the last few months showcasing their geography, spelling, and creative skills, as well as their patriotism and enthusiasm for learning.

The Springfield Township School is located at 2146 Jacksonville-Jobstown Road in Jobstown, NJ. The school serves students in Kindergarten through 6th grade.

Recently, 5th and 6th grade students participated in a National Geography Bee. Students had to show their mastery of capitals of countries around the world, expressing knowledge of continents and bodies of water.

Jimmy D. was the first place winner. He progressed into competition with other elementary school Geography Bee Champions.

Christopher S. earned runner-up status.

Also competing, representing their grade 5 classes were: Heather B., Victoria B., Travis E., Thomas K., Jayson N. and grade 6: Anthony B., Phillip B., James C., Laura H., and Kevin S.

On January 30th, 5th and 6th grade students participated in the Scripps Howard Spelling Bee sponsored by The Burlington County Times. The contest is a nationwide challenge in search of a champion of spelling. Following four rounds of words spanning from literature and history, Rebecca M., Brianna F. and James D. emerged as the Champion Spellers for Springfield Township School District.

Jimmy D. progressed to the regional level of the Scripps Howard Spelling Bee hosted on Saturday, March 9, 2002 in Delran, New Jersey. The winner of that competition progresses onto Washington, D.C. for Bee Week 2002 and the 75th Annual Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee.

Local spelling bee participants included: James D., Brianna F., Chad G., Deanna H., Rebecca M., Devon M., Ashley B., Victoria B., Kevin S., Cindy B., Anthony B., and Sara R.

The school’s 4th annual science fair was held at the end of February. This year’s top winners include the following students (and many more were also honored):

4th grade first place: Lauren H. & Courtney S.

4th grade second place: Joseph S.

4th grade third place (two entry winners): Stephen S.; Alexander C. & Kyle H.

5th grade first place: Parker S.

5th grade second place: Jenny A.

5th grade third place: Heather B.

6th grade first place: David S.

6th grade second place: Christina K.

6th grade third place (three individual entry winners): Anthony B.; James C.; Dan R.

The Springfield Township School also had winners in the Junior American Citizens, Colonel Thomas Reynolds Chapter Art and Creative Expression Competitions.

The Junior American Citizens Committee is a youth-oriented committee of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Their goal is to instruct youth with “some knowledge of the under-lying principles of our Government, of American sentiment, and of all that will go toward making them good citizens.” The competitions sponsored by this organization encourage students to show their patriotism through the creative arts.

This year, the following students were honored: Poster Category: 2nd grade-2nd place-Sheri B.; 6th grade-2nd place-Melissa R

Stamp Category: 3rd grade-1st place-Nikki B.; 6th grade-1st place-Anthony B.

Photographic Essay Category: 6th grade-2nd place-Jonathon S.

Short Story Category: 6th grade-2nd place-Christopher S.

Poetry Category: 6th grade-3rd place-Laura H.

The Annual Springfield Spring Concert is scheduled for Thursday, May 23, 2002 at 7:00 p.m.. This year's concert theme is "Look to the Future." They will be performing songs that encourage them to rejoice in the spirit of the future. Their Winter Concert featured "Songs of Peace and Patriotism," a time of remembrance. Now, the students are turning their attention towards thoughts of the future and all the great things that they will become and all the wonderful contributions that they, as children of the future, may bring. The featured ensembles for the Spring Concert will be 3rd Grade Chorus, 4th Grade Chorus, Brass Choir, Band and Combined 5th/6th Grade Chorus.
