Renowned composer and conductor James Curnow comes to Rowan University to lead the Annual Side-By-Side Concert, combining university and high school musicians, on April 7, 2004 at 8 p.m. This unique concert event allows high school musicians from the region to perform "side by side" with Rowan students under the direction of a noted guest conductor. This year - with representatives from 19 high schools - the performance includes the world premiere of "Perspectives" by Rowan faculty member Ed Vezinho. Adjunct faculty member and clarinetist Rie Suzuki will join the group to perform the Clarinet Concertino by Carl Maria von Weber. Graduating senior Christopher Pastin will be featured in a percussion piece entitled "Swanee." As a conductor, composer and clinician, Curnow has traveled throughout the United States and the world. He has written more than 200 works for concert band, brass brand, orchestra, choir and various vocal and instrumental ensembles; his published works now number well over 400. Serving as president, composer and educational consultant for Curnow Music Press, Inc., Curnow publishes significant music for concert band and brass band. He serves as Composer-in-Residence on the faculty of Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky, and is editor of all music publications for the Salvation Army in Atlanta. He belongs to several professional organizations and has received countless honors such as Composer of the Year in 1997 by the Kentucky Music Teachers Association and the National Music Teachers Association. He received the National Band Association's Citation of Excellence (1980) and outstanding faculty member at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana (1985).
