The Trenton Thunder, Double A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, posted 14 hits and 11 runs, but were still on the losing end of the match with the Portland Seadogs, Double A affiliate of the Florida Marlins, as the Thunder pitchers walked 12 batters. The Thunder, now 63-73 on the season, were defeated by the Seadogs (66-69) by a score of 15-11 in front of 6,862 at Waterfront Park. Rob Radlosky took the loss for the Thunder, falling to 1-4 on the season. He allowed eight runs on eight hits, two walks and one strike out in three innings. Claudio Vargas improved to 1-1 on the season, earning the win for the Seadogs. He allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits, no walks and three strikeouts. Bobby Rodgers earned earned his 21st save of the season.
The Thunder put five pitchers on the mound against the Portland offense. Although leaving 13 Seadogs stranded on base, The 14 hits, 15 runs and 12 walks balanced the attack and put the Seadogs on top.
With strong offensive efforts by the Thunder (Shea Hillenbrand: 5-5, three runs, four RBI and Virgil Chevalier: 4-5, three runs, 1 RBI), the Thunder came back fROm a 12-2 deficit after the Portland fourth inning which scored seven runs. The Thunder came within two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Hillenbrand homered to bring in three runs, making the score 12-10.
But the Seadogs came back, adding three runs to their lead over the Thunder in the eighth and ninth innings. Derek Wathan, 2-5, scored on a sacrifice in the eighth and Terrence Hill, in relief for the Thunder, walked in both runs in the ninth.
Although the Thunder scored a run in the bottom of the ninth as Les Dennis, 2-5, scored on a single by Shea Hillenbrand, it was not enough to claim the lead, making the final score 15-11, in the game that lasted three hours and 48 minutes.
The teams will face off in game two of the series tomorrow. Nerio Rodriguez (6-6) will throw for the Thunder against Chris Clark (5-3) who will be on the mound for the Seadogs. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
